For Turkcell, sustainability is the focal point of our core business strategy.
Sustainability
We take the initiative in reducing the environmental impact of our operational activities and develop our office practices and business processes in accordance with sustainable innovation principles. From our viewpoint, it’s a part of our business to include all our employees, their families, suppliers, investors, and customers in this process.
We’ve been publishing the Turkcell Sustainability Report every year since 2011. Also, since 2014 we have been measuring our carbon footprint within the scope of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). And ever since 2015, we’ve been listed on the Borsa İstanbul Sustainability Index. We are proud to be the first mobile operator with ISO 50001 and ISO 14064 certifications.
Sustainability and the Use of Renewable Energy in Our Business Processes
As Turkcell Group, we are undergoing a sustainable electricity supply transformation. Through the solar panel and wind turbine projects carried out during 2019, we have taken the first steps of this transformation, and aim to meet our electricity consumption exclusively from renewable sources by 2030.
As Turkcell, we aim to transform into a completely carbon-neutral company by 2050.
Sustainable Innovative Products for Our Customers
We conduct studies that help our customers and our cities advance towards a more sustainable way of life, and we realize sustainable innovative products such as Dergilik, Turkcell Filiz, Kopilot, Akıllı Faks and Dijital İmza.
Office Implementations
The Turkcell Waste Management Center we have established enables us to recycle our solid food waste collected on-site from the dining hall and office floors from which we produce soil-improving organic fertilizer.
We recycle paper used in our offices and try to prevent unnecessary consumption with our centralized printing system.
We use sensor lighting, energy saving light bulbs and a smart watch system for lighting in all our offices.
We recycle the unused electronic waste of our employees even from their homes.
Sustainable Projects
- We’re planting vegetation at base stations to erase our carbon footprint resulting from fuel consumption in Turkcell and Superonline logistics operations. We’re planting thousands of trees around the base stations in cooperation with the Association for Solidarity of Environmental Organizations (Çeküd).
- We have been drawing attention to the pollution of our seas during 2019. In order to raise awareness of this issue, we organized a sea cleaning event during the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup with the cooperation of the WWF and the participation of Turkcell volunteers. We exhibited works of art produced by Şinasi Yelkenci who made exclusive use of waste gathered from the sea, and who presented one of those works of art to the winner of the race. In addition, we have used only disposable plastics and ensured recycling throughout the racing area.
- Direct steps were taken at the Turkcell Gallipoli Marathon regarding the planting of new saplings. We have planted 30,000 saplings in the Güzelyalı and Çınarlı regions over recent years and a further 100,000 this year, expanding our own Turkcell Peace Forest.
- Rather than have them wait idly, we refurbished unused devices and put them back on the market with a 1-year warranty.
- We are launching a recycling campaign for electronic waste with the Recycle to Education project. We invite everyone to bring their electronic waste to Turkcell stores. In corporation with TUBİSAD we send this waste collected at Turkcell stores for recycling and convert resulting income into qualified education through TEGV (Educational Volunteers).
- In order to increase employee welfare and strengthen their competence capacity, Turkcell offered many training opportunities to its employees in 2023. Turkcell's total investment in employee training in 2023 is 35,300,024.43 TL.
- Turkcell regularly conducts general satisfaction surveys to measure employees' loyalty to the company. The employee engagement survey is conducted every two years. It was conducted in 2021 and 2023, and a 2-point increase was achieved in 2023.
We completed the employee engagement survey, which we conducted to further improve Turkcell and discover our strengths, with a high participation rate of 92%. According to these measurements, our engagement score was 73% and our overall satisfaction score was 86%, increasing by 2 points from the previous survey score. According to the survey results, the most appreciated topics at Turkcell are the flexible working model, the contribution of the working model to performance, colleagues, managers and finding meaning. Development areas are career, talent management and rewards. In light of this data, we earned the title of Kincentric Turkey "Best Workplace". - As a company with high awareness of occupational health and safety, we take all precautions to reduce our occupational accidents and report all occupational accidents that occur. We also show the same sensitivity to our contractors and regularly follow their occupational accident statistics.
- According to legal regulations, since we are not responsible for the occupational safety structure of the contractor employees with whom we have made a turnkey work contract, the calculation was made only based on our total number of accidents, including our subcontractor.
- In the calculations, we considered our daily working hours as 8 hours, and our working days in 2023 were taken as 252 days.
- The total number of accidents/injuries, including the subcontractor, was taken as 22, and our total number of employees at the end of the year was taken as 6,382.
- The Accident Frequency Rate we used in reporting expresses the number of occupational accidents occurring in 1 million working hours over a certain period. It is calculated as follows:
- Accident Frequency Rate = [(Total Number of Accidents in a Year / Total Working Hours) * 1,000,000]
- (22 / (252 * 8 * 6,382)) * 1,000,000 = 1.71
